AurumReport, Stimulsoft and FastReport: different approaches to reporting

Facts without opinions. Compare for yourself.

Stimulsoft and FastReport are mature professional reporting systems that have shaped the market for decades. We know what they can do, and we respect them. AurumReport is not “one more” product of the same kind: we designed it from scratch for the modern application architecture. Below are facts, without opinions.

Three different approaches

Stimulsoft

A commercial reporting platform: template designer, viewer, server components, export to common formats; editions for .NET and JavaScript.

FastReport

A reporting ecosystem (.NET) with open source and commercial licensing: designer, engine, viewer, export to common formats.

AurumReport

A web-first TypeScript reporting engine: isomorphic — renders in the browser and on the server (Bun). Template .aur + JSON → document. Viewer and designer, SVG/PDF/Excel/Word/HTML export, import of .mrt (Stimulsoft) and .frx (FastReport) templates.

Why AurumReport exists

We spent years working with classic report generators. They solved an enormous number of problems. But the application architecture has changed: browser, SPA, containers, cloud, AI. We wanted to see what a report engine would look like if it were designed today: lightweight, isomorphic, embeddable — without heavy server infrastructure.

Importing .mrt and .frx: what is carried over

Already have Stimulsoft (.mrt) or FastReport (.frx) templates? AurumReport converts them into its own .aur format:

  • bands and page structure (reportTitle, pageHeader, columnHeader, data, groupHeader, groupFooter, pageFooter and others);
  • text objects: fonts, alignment, borders, fills, rotations, word wrap;
  • pictures and their placement modes;
  • field bindings like [source.field];
  • report scripts — carried over into AuScript events;
  • some source-specific settings may need manual finishing.

What to look at when choosing

We deliberately do not put “better/worse” checkmarks here — the choice is yours. These are the questions worth asking any report engine:

  • Where does rendering run: in the browser, on the server, or both?
  • How does the engine fit your stack (JavaScript/TypeScript, .NET, other)?
  • Which export formats does your product actually need?
  • What about licensing: price, updates, support, distribution royalties?
  • Will your existing template base carry over?
  • Who maintains the product and how fast does it evolve?
